Director Recruitment

Why our credit union?

For over 35 years, Scottish University Community Bank has proudly served the staff and students at Scotland’s universities and colleges. Our members have placed their trust in us, saving over £1.7 million last year. In turn, we’ve supported our community by lending over £800,000 between 2024 and 2025, our highest borrowing year yet.

Why do we need you?

As we continue to grow, we need the involvement of members who believe in the values of community, fairness and wellbeing that our organisation represents, and help us navigate the opportunities and challenges of the future. Being a part of the board is an opportunity to:

  • Give back to an organisation you are a part of
  • Make an impact in the community
  • Join committed individuals who share a similar vision
  • Help Guide the credit union
  • Influence policies and our long-term strategy
  • Support our dedicated staff

What does this mean for you?

Taking on this role allows you to build confidence as you tackle new challenges, gain a sense of achievement, and enjoy the satisfaction that comes from helping others.

Serving on the Board also provides valuable experience that can benefit your career. You’ll develop practical skills in finance, administration, customer service, and governance, while receiving professional training in operations, policy, and planning.

Beyond personal and professional development, your involvement has a real impact on the community. By supporting the Credit Union, you help members access fair loans and savings, reduce reliance on high-interest debt, and promote ethical finance. Volunteering also fosters connections with staff and students across Scotland’s universities, creating a strong sense of belonging and shared purpose.

Who are the current Members of our board of directors?

Scottish Universities Community Bank currently have six(6) dedicated Directors who volunteer their time to guide and support our credit Union [Insert Link]. Here’s what some of them have to say about their experience.

Derek

“I was drawn to the Credit Union as a member by its ethos and its aims. It is a cooperative organisation that is owned and controlled by its members for its members and is run as not-for-profit and not to put money into the pockets of shareholders or investors.

Staff members helping other staff members to save and borrow at reasonable rates. Easy, safe and ethical.

As a volunteer-run organisation, I was happy to devote my time and energy and use my business experience to help the credit union and its members to develop sustainably and continue to help staff with their financial needs.

Phil

“I was approached about becoming a director and thought it would be an interesting and rewarding voluntary role.  I’ve benefitted from being a SUCB member, saving without thinking about it via payroll deduction.  I think there’s much more which SUCB can achieve, and being on the Board helps to drive us forward.  Being Secretary allows me to use my professional experience in a different setting. “
